Dr. Bartosz Banduła, Prof. of the School of Management and Banking: Restricting your PESEL number is a chance to protect yourself against scams, for example, those using the grandchild method
Starting June 1, banks will be required to verify the PESEL number before signing a loan agreement, as well as before withdrawing larger amounts of cash. The amount in question is more than three times the minimum wage, or more than 12 thousand zlotys. In the case of a restricted PESEL number, payment will not be made until 12 hours later. Bartosz Banduła, PhD, of the School of Management and Banking tells Radio Krakow about what situations it helps to protect our personal data.
In fact, it can be said-as a matter of principle-if we want to protect our identity, then the restriction of the PESEL number is one of such elements that protect us from identity theft-especially in the area of banking services, which are naturally moving more and more to the Internet and will be subject to greater digitalization, then we should have our PESEL number restricted, in fact, automatically. That is, we should not think about whether to do it or not – but to restrict the PESEL number, and at the time when we will need to buy something in installments or take a loan – then such a number can be activated quite easily in the application.
